Blue Gum - Happy New Year

Hi everyone and welcome to a brand new year.

Very pleasant day with 6 of us in attendance.

Hand Work

Irene was working on another scarf for charity. It's a pattern where you increase at the ends of the rows and the yarn was soft and pretty!

Heather is working on her long term project. Beautiful applique.

Marilyn is working on another crochet temperature rug. The blocks were quite small and the colour chart was interesting! Marilyn has kept a log of days of the week and temperatures and weather status as well.

Cath was working on the handles for a new bag, in purple of course!

Rita was working on her large floral hexagons.

Show & Tell

This is a lovely little quilt by Heather. It started as a fun fabric strip swap at a retreat! Lovely.

Some fabric purchased in Japan was the inspiration for this quilt top by Glynis

A waistcoat/vest Glynis was working on and is now finished.

Next get together:  will be at the Blue Gum on Saturday 7 February 2026. Hope to see you there!

Our next gathering will be Saturday December 6 at the Blue Gum. Emma is organising a Christmas gift exchange on the day. For those who would like to participate please bring a small gift up to the value of $20. Emma has suggested a small hand made gift included in the bundle would be lovely.

Welcome to the Southern Cross Quilters 'Online Pub Outing!' (Self Isolating does wonders for our crafty minds and hands.)

Our regular Saturday Pub Quilty days may have ceased for a little while but...  nothing can stop the dedicated Crafty person can it... can't stop the dedicated Blogger either if the truth be known 😉
Our Online SCQer friends have sent me photos of their Handwork from all over Australia and New Zealand as well, so enjoy a little time checking out these beautiful works which may inspire you to dig deep in your sewing room and get stuck back onto something you started long long ago... or inspire you to try something you have never done before.

These photos are in alphabetical order, not the order they were sent to me... Enjoy!  😊

Cate - in N.S.W. - A Saturday gathering I can actually attend! I’m working on this, a gift for my MIL’s birthday as I can no longer wander the shops looking for a gift.

Cori - in W.A. - Here is what I am working on right now - packing essentials for self isolation in the country.

Making a rug for a Grandson.

Dy - in W.A. -  This blanket is called a C2CJAYG!  Corner to corner join as you go.  Normally this type of crochet is done in diagonal rows but I saw this method and thought I’d give it a try.  I have lots of different colours of yarn so well suited!   Dy is also trying to do a bit of drawing and watercolour.

Erica - in N.S.W. -  I cut out a lot of pieces for six-pointed stars. It was going to be the hand piecing project I worked on at my new quilt group but all those meetings have been cancelled indefinitely. So I may as well sew them with you!

Fran - in Tasmania. -  Hand sewing binding on a quilt for Grandson.   A Stack and Slash on the design bed.

Jean - in N.S.W. - I’m working on the binding of this quilt which is the result of a class at last year’s Quilt Encounter in Adelaide.

Jill - in N.S.W. -  I’m sewing random width strips together by machine, no handwork just now, templates on their way.

Joy - in N.S.W. -  Looking to putting the sashing in as I have used Japanese material have chosen a red Japanese plain for the sashing and boarder

Lissa Jane - in N.S.W. -  This is what I’m working on. Just finished week 4, 2 more weeks to go. Sweet pea posy crochet a long (CAL) attic24, wool from wool warehouse.

Liz - in S.A. - Have been working on this  quilt this last week. A friend of mine -  Elvira- some of you may remember her from Retreats etc has taken on the job of organising the making and distributing of quilts for war veterans. She inspired me to get off my butt and start sewing, so here is my first effort. Haven’t made very many “man” quilts so this was interesting – and it used up some of my stash. Already planning my next one.

Loz - in  N.Z. -  The bag is from my Wendy Williams two day workshop over here at my local shop and the quilt is a basket weave quilt I finished putting together today.

Lyn - in N.S.W. - ‘Roebuck’ quilt commenced in class at Quiltsmith in 2007. Up to putting on last round, hopefully finish in the next week or so.

Lynne - in N.S.W. -  Face Masks made with Vilene non woven fabric.

PennieDarling's Grandaughter Abigail (16) was here for 5 weeks from Macao - Firstly Abi wanted to learn to knit so here she is knitting a little doll (no that is not a tattoo on her leg, she drew it herself)
Secondly Abi had to make a model of a Cell for her online school work, I was so impressed I had to add it to our blog.
Thirdly she decided to teach herself some stitchery, so here is what she sewed onto her jeans!

Pennie - in N.S.W. - I put a new binding on this 1994 quilt of David's because his whiskers ruined it, those whiskers have also ruined some of the blocks... maybe I will attend to them next time... or maybe not??

Then I found these Place Mats I started many many years ago, I had finished 5 and have 7 tops to complete but... but... but just as I started my sewing machine froze on me, it's now at the fix it shop and thankfully a friend has lent me a spare so I will continue.  Hopefully next time I 'Online Quilt Blog' all 12 of them will be finished.!

Soooo... below continuing on with my most difficult knitting project ever, I have finished the body and am now working on the sleeves but there will be a lot of tidying up inside and out when it's all together!  Loving it though!

Rita - in N.S.W. -  I’m making 10 laundry bags for Aussie Hero Quilts (I have fabric for at least 100 laundry bags) then completely cleaning the pantry, 10 more laundry bags, cleaning all the wooden blinds, 10 more bags, weeding the side garden, 10 more bags etc...

Robyn - in N.S.W. -  To keep sane I’m working on two quilts - my hexies using Liberty fabrics and this block from Michelle McKillop’s Spindrift pattern. I won’t be adhering strictly to her quilt pattern and am designing some of my own blocks to add to it. Or maybe this will make a nice pot holder.

Steph Mc - N.S.W. - Making Masks.
The photo above is of my (PennieDarling's) Rose I put on Facebook and below is Steph Mc's painting of same, how lovely is this eh!
 Steph's Kooka's.

Stephanie M. - NSW -  I'm sewing this - well I’m still at the cutting stage. It’s Halo Quilt by Jen Kingwell. I made one block by machine but I think I’ll get better accuracy by hand piecing it. Here’s my busy work cutting station.
And here’s my test block.
And I’ve just finished knitting this - it’s number 4 for Find Your Fade - all scraps - it’s 2.5 m from one end to the other ... absolutely enormous and I still have scraps leftover

Yan - in N.S.W. -  1990 was a great year – woven plaids – still the softest thing ever, (goodness, I was hand quilting, there must have been long cold nights happening.
ANZAC Quilt ready to hang out front - We will REMEMBER THEM

This almost did my poor ‘Math Deficient’ brain in.  I love it now and could bravely make another.
